#AskATravelAgentThursday – Mary!

Today’s #AskATravelAgentThursday is so informative we couldn’t contain it in a simple post.

Mary is the leisure operations manager at our Lakewood office and has been with Travel Leaders – Travel Center for over 20 years. Recently, her and our Destination Wedding and Honeymoon specialist, Jessica, went on a Viking River Cruise. Naturally, we wanted to learn more.

Q: What type of travelers would you recommend to board the Viking River Cruise you just experienced?

A: “We did a 7-day Rhine Getaway which concentrated on the cities along the Rhine River from Basel, Switzerland to Amsterdam.  This would be the perfect trip for someone wanting to concentrate on a specific country or region and get a really good feel for the history & culture.  It is a relaxing way to travel because you get on board and unpack, knowing where you will stay every night and you get to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you would like to.  You are always free, however when in a port to sample local cuisine.  They also like to serve regional specialties on the ship.  They have great guides who have knowledge of each city.”

Quilt Camp At Sea: Quilts of Valor

Travel Leaders is home to the founding members of an enthusiastic group called Quilt Camp At Sea, a merry group of quilters who cruise to destinations throughout the world once or twice a year, sharing their love of quilting with fellow enthusiasts aboard select Holland America Line sailings.

What began as a simple block exchange among friends became a goal to quilt for a greater purpose. After a bit of research, “Quilt Camp’s” community of 100+ longstanding members decided they wanted to give back to the many family and friends serving in America’s Armed Forces through their gift of quilting.  Through the Quilts of Valor Foundation, their collaborative creative efforts would honor local Armed Forces Servicemembers by making them one-of-a-kind quilts with fabric created specifically for the Quilts of Valor Foundation that illustrates the collective pride and support of those who have and still serve in US Military.  Each pattern, though unique, has requirements that must be met to make it an official “Quilts of Valor” quilt.

Before gifting, they are reviewed by the Foundation to make sure all the requirements were carried out, given a certification tag, and a matching presentation case.

The response within “Quilt Camp” was so popular, enough blocks for THREE quilts were made.

The first dedication ceremony was held on Veteran’s Day 2014, honoring Janusz Byczynski through special arrangements at Homestreet Bank.

The second quilt was gifted on December 22, 2014 to Sgt Jason Call at Madigan Army Medical Center.

The third quilt is awaiting it’s finishing touches and will be presented at a later date.

All quilts will presented to the selected veterans by Quilt Camp’s own (Ret.) Lieutenant Colonel Len Tobin.
